Orient Lines to cancel maiden European season PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:17
The ‘new’ Orient Lines, whose revival was the dream of Orlando-based entrepeneur Wayne Heller, is canceling its 2009 Europe season, sources told Seatrade Insider. The company had planned to begin operations with Maxim Gorkiy, renamed Marco Polo II, in the spring.

It is believed Heller hopes to reorganize to relaunch at a more favorable time. No comment was available from the company early today. An announcement is expected this afternoon.

Seatrade Insider understands the ship is on charter to its long-time operator, Phoenix Reisen, through November. The plan had been to take it to drydock in December for work including SOLAS 2010 updates, with the maiden voyage scheduled for April 15 from Barcelona.

Reports of challenges faced in launching the enterprise in the current economic climate have circulated for months. Two weeks ago, Orient Lines laid off 10 full-time staff including evp Bruce Nierenberg, who subsequently resigned, but Heller maintained the operation was moving forward.

Reservations opened in early September. In early October, the line slashed fares for its maiden European season.

Delays in setting final contract could push Port of Miami tunnel opening back a year to 2013 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 07 November 2008 17:41

By Risa Polansky

Delays in setting a final contract for a $1 billion-plus tunnel to the Port of Miami could push back the project's once-expected opening, said Gus Pego, District 6 secretary for the Florida Department of Transportation, which is heading up the project.

A "2012 [completion] would be probably unrealistic. 2013 would be more realistic," he said in an interview last week.

Miami-Dade County and City of Miami commissioners have already given final approval to the tunnel, designed to relieve downtown traffic by connecting the port with Watson Island, allowing trucks direct access to the MacArthur Causeway and I-395.
